YOUR DOG AND THE WINTER

Updated: Sep 29, 2022

Winter will soon arrive! Spending time with your best friend during this season can be enjoyable, but it also requires that you attend to their heating needs.

Here are our top tips:

Adapt the diet:

Giving dogs who might catch colds in the winter extra calories to consume is advised by veterinarians. If your dog lives outside or you frequently go outside to play sports or go for long walks, raising the portions will help him produce more body heat. Raising the amounts is not advised if your pet lives at home and is not active.

Plan the walks and prepare their necessary clothing.

Dogs should still go for daily walks, even in extreme cold. You can try to take advantage of as many sunny hours as you can and plan walks for when the weather is a little warmer to keep your pet from getting chilled. Try to reduce the length of your walks on the coldest days possible.

If your pet's fur isn't prepared for winter, you can choose to dress it in a sweater or coat, which will keep it warm and comfortable while protecting it from the cold. To protect their paws from being injured by snow or ice, you can also include some boots if the floor is too chilly.

Protect the fur from humidity.

Your pet is more likely to become chilled since it is constantly wet due to exposure to the cold, wind, rain, or snow. Remember that the dog's fur is its natural coat, thus we must make every effort to maintain it in the best possible shape.

Our friend's hair will be better protected from the cold if we maintain it tidy, dry, combed, and free of knots. Therefore, if it gets wet, it's best to use a towel or a dryer to quickly dry its fur.

Keep in mind that dog raincoats are an excellent solution to protect our pets' fur from the winter's humidity and chill.

Plan a trip to the Vet.

Dogs need to see the vet frequently (it is recommended that it be at least twice a year). It can be a good idea to go to the vet during the winter.

By doing this, we can ensure that our pet's joints are in good condition, that they are fed adequately, and that we receive guidance on how to make sure that our buddy has a comfortable and warm winter.
